Councils 'have power' to tackle poor schools

Ofsted chief, Sir Michael Wilshaw, has rejected claims by local authority leaders that they lack powers to intervene in failing schools.

Ofsted chief, Sir Michael Wilshaw has rejected claims by local authority leaders this week that they lack powers to intervene in failing schools.

His comments follow Ofsted consultation on a new framework for inspecting local authority school improvement services which the Local Government Association (LGA) said was no longer applicable because of the number of opted-out academies.
