Councils to have greater powers to compulsorily buy green belt land

Local authorities will be handed powers to ensure landowners sell green belt land for housebuilding at a reasonable price under the Government’s planning reforms.

Local authorities will be handed powers to ensure landowners sell green belt land for housebuilding at a reasonable price under the Government's planning reforms. 

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) confirmed councils will be expected to take a ‘proactive role' in bringing forward land for housing to meet its target of building 1.5 million new homes by 2030.
