Should councils buy property miles away?

Tiffany Cloynes questions what legislation to impose a geographical limit on where councils can buy property would achieve – as a local authority already needs to ‘act reasonably in exercising its powers’

Eyebrows were raised recently when it was revealed South Somerset DC had considered investing in property as far away as Newcastle.

But this isn't a new phenomenon. Local authorities have the power to acquire land by agreement and to be authorised by the relevant minister to acquire land compulsorily and these powers are not restricted to the acquisition of land within a local authority's area.
