Councils have called on the Government to introduce a statutory duty on ratepayers to inform the authorities of changes to business rate properties.

In written responses to a government discussion paper on ways to improve the administration of business rates, published last week, local authorities argued this would bring things into alignment with the likes of council tax and deal with the issue of backdating.
