Councils shouldn't be afraid to let go

Local government will need the support and collaboration of communities to tackle the big social challenges we face, argues Joe Wills of Centre for London.

Eight years on from the Localism Act, how have attempts to devolve power and decision-making beyond local authorities progressed in London?

Our research has found what could be described as a ‘mixed bag'. While some initiatives have successfully bedded in around the capital, notably Neighbourhood Planning and Business Improvement Districts, we've also found that there are still a number of hurdles to overcome before neighbourhoods and communities are able to have a greater say in the governance of the city.
