Councils warned over tax rises

Ministers have threatened the highest spending town councils with the prospect of being forced to hold referendums over proposed tax rises of more than 2%.

Ministers have threatened the highest spending town councils with the prospect of being forced to hold referendums over proposed tax rises of more than 2%.

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is currently consulting over whether some third-tier councils should be subject to the same referendum principle as the rest of local government.
