Local authorities were this week told to tackle failing schools – or face government intervention that could transfer them to the fast-growing academies sector.

The Local Government Association (LGA) and the chief inspector of schools in England warned authorities their existing ability to intervene in poor schools should be regarded as ‘use it or lose it' powers.
