Counties facing new tax benefit shortfall

County councils are facing a significant new blow to their budgets, after it emerged they will cover the majority of any shortfall in CTB.

County councils are facing a significant new blow to their budgets, after it emerged they will cover the majority of any shortfall in council tax benefit (CTB) when administration of the payments transfer to local authorities.

Under current government proposals, responsibility for CTB will shift to local authorities from 2013, although each area must cope with a 10% cut to their existing budget – which ministers hope will be met through ‘efficiency savings'.
