Court ruling backs ministers' pensions plan

Public sector trade unions have reacted with dismay to the Court of Appeal's rejection of their latest legal challenge.

Public sector trade unions have reacted with dismay to the Court of Appeal's rejection of their latest legal challenge against the Government's decision to up-rate pensions in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and not the Retail Price Index (RPI).

In a ruling today, judges unanimously confirmed the Government had acted within its powers in making the switch to the lower CPI measure of inflation used to increase public sector pensions.
