Anti-poverty campaigners are celebrating a court victory preventing Whitehall's largest department from recovering overpayments of benefits made in error by civil servants.

The Supreme Court last week dismissed an appeal by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and ruled the secretary of state could not recover overpayments which were not the fault of such benefit claimants.
