I had been a Haringey councillor for a little longer than a year when Peter Connelly was killed in August 2007. In the days following his death, we were told that a young child known to children's services had died, but further details were sketchy.
The full horror of Peter's story only fully came to light in late 2008, when those responsible for his fatal injuries were jailed. Their convictions, and the appalling details of how the council and other agencies had failed to protect Peter from unthinkable harm, understandably sent shockwaves through the country.
