Cumbria councils may join forces over waste

Cumbria county council has vetoed plans for an underground nuclear waste site.

The prospect of local government reorganisation in Cumbria has been reignited after the county council vetoed plans for an underground nuclear waste site.

Cumbria CC rejected plans for the £12bn site in the west of county on 30 January, prompting speculation the two local authorities nearest to the potential site – Copeland and Allerdale BCs – may join forces to find a solution for storing nuclear waste in the county, and even make a joint bid for unitary status.
