'Cut spending or face downgrade' warning

A top ratings agency warns local government's strong creditworthiness could be downgraded.

Further reductions in Westminster grants to councils which do not lead to spending cuts could mean local government's strong creditworthiness is downgraded, a top ratings agency has warned.

Standard and Poor's last week reported that UK local government would maintain a strong credit rating, despite current spending cuts, a new wave of housing debt, and structural changes.
