The Government has slashed local transport capital funding by almost one-quarter (22%), leaving council chiefs to warn they are faced with ‘the perfect storm of crumbling roads and a black hole in their budgets'.

Road maintenance funding will face cuts of 15% over the course of the Spending Review period, despite the current backlog standing at £9.5bn, according to this year's annual local authority road maintenance survey.
