More cuts could see reserves 'disappear'

The LGA warns cash reserves for local authorities would be depleted within five years, if they are forced to use them to cover spending.

Local authorities would see their £17bn cash reserves totally depleted within five years, if they are forced to use them to cover protracted spending cuts, the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned.

Highlighting new figures on reserves published recently by the DCLG, Smith Square analysts this week warned that around £12.4bn had already been earmarked by councils for investment in pro-growth infrastructure schemes.
