Troubled Wirral MBC has been dealt a fresh blow following the release of a damning report criticising the way officials procured a multimillion-pound highways contract.

Published on 8 May, the district auditor's public interest report came just a day after the Merseyside council accepted a request for early retirement from its chief executive, Jim Wilkie, after he had spent just one year in the post.
