We are dangerously dependent on London as a cash cow

The nation’s public finances rely too much on the capital, and the Tories seem indifferent to what happens to London’s economy after Brexit, warns Michael Burton.

Somewhat lost in last week's grim news was a batch of public spending figures from the Office for National Statistics showing that London's surplus to the public coffers last year was £3,070 per head.

Each Londoner generated £15,750, almost double that of the North East and Wales. Bar London, the South East and East, all English regions plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland had public sector fiscal deficits.
