Former Chancellor Alistair Darling has accused the government of gambling on an export-led recovery to offset public spending cuts.

Mr Darling, who was Chancellor under Gordon Brown, told a breakfast seminar today: 'I was always concerned that if the government took too much money out of the economy the private sector would lose confidence and you wouldn't get growth.
