Fears that local government is set to be a major loser in the forthcoming Spending Review after cuts of 30% to the Communities department budget have provoked fierce criticism from both inside and outside the sector.

The Treasury this week confirmed that the Department for Communities and Local Government's (DCLG) £2.7bn resource spending budget will be slashed by an average 8% annually for the next four years.
