Debating the 'cost' of democracy

Democratic process impedes sensible decision-making, says Michael Burton.

Hundreds of new councillors will be blinking in the daylight come Friday afternoon, wondering what made them decide to take up the task of representative local government.

They can expect no thanks from the public, a hostile local press, missives from Eric Pickles telling them they are little more than boy Scouts and Girl Guides and then on 26 June an announcement from George Osborne that their budgets will be slashed.
