Let's deliver a long-term local resettlement system

Schemes to support refugees must exist around a core, standardised resettlement programme that has a multi-year commitment and specific targets and a variety of housing strategies, says Yvonne Kachikoti.

Almost three months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Government's Homes for Ukraine scheme – built on the overwhelming desire of the UK public to help refugees – is starting to welcome the large numbers of people we hoped it would.

But the continued cavalier approach to safeguarding that has dogged the scheme from the start, when ministers boasted of a ‘light tough' approach to checks on sponsors, is threatening to undo the work being done to get people safe.
