Delivering on the potential of home care

Chris Thomas says other countries have identified the chance to put care at home at the centre of their social policy agenda – ‘and the UK should have the same ambition’.

There is great anticipation around the Government's long-awaited social care reforms. In his first speech as Prime Minister, Boris Johnson made it one of his top priorities. This was followed with a manifesto commitment to a lasting, consensus-driven solution. A detailed plan is now expected by the end of the year, but there is a risk the Government is set to double-down on the existing system of care that isn't delivering the flourishing lives people desire.

Reports suggest the Government's preferred plan is a new cap on care costs. The fine print will depend on how negotiations between the Prime Minister and the chancellor develop – the former is reportedly pushing for a cap on costs of £50,000, while the latter ponders how we can afford it.
