Patrick Hartop discusses how the Plymouth and South West Peninsula City Deal used powers and funding to tackle the local skills gap and better support regional businesses

The skills gap is a concern familiar to manufacturers and engineering firms across the UK.

According to a recent study by the Institute of Engineering and Technology, 64% of employers say a shortage of engineers is a threat to their business, while 66% of the companies surveyed are concerned the education system will struggle to keep up with the skills needed for the future. The problem is only going to become more acute.
