Senior local government politicians have urged Whitehall to give councils more responsibility for job creation, under the coalition's Work Programme.

The flagship Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) programme, announced in October 2010, aims to provide incentives to ‘specialist delivery partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors' to get people back into work. The DWP originally claimed it would hand partners freedom ‘from over-prescription from central government'.
