The Department for Education (DfE) has failed to clearly set out what roles and responsibilities local authorities and academy sponsors have over school spending, watchdogs have reported.

The Department for Education (DfE) has failed to clearly set out what roles and responsibilities local authorities and academy sponsors have over school spending, watchdogs have reported.

A National Audit Office study issued last week found the DfE's estimated annual £382m spend on oversight and intervention did not achieve value for money because of inconsistencies in how school under-performance is tackled.
