Inflationary pressures hitting a major highways project could set a ‘difficult precedent' for public spending across the country, the Department for Transport (DfT) fears.

The department's concerns were revealed after Norfolk CC signed off on the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (NDR) earlier this month, with the project facing a shortfall of £29.9m after costs rose to a target of £178m this year.
