Heather Jameson looks at how the push for directly elected mayors has become something of an unmitigated disaster.

The push for directly-elected mayors has once again become something of an unmitigated disaster – and despite the best efforts of the Government to pretend otherwise, the embarrassment just keeps coming.

Since the policy was first mooted, it has never quite captured the public's imagination as much as it has captured the imagination of our prime ministers – both Blair and Cameron.
