Michael Burton reflects on how former chancellor Alistair Darling's lack of answers to growth problem highlights dire economic state.

I had hoped, when I attended a breakfast lecture by Alistair Darling last week (see themj.co.uk), that the former chancellor might give us some answers on how to tackle the longest-running downturn since the First World War.

The fact that he did not, other than to call for a slowdown in spending cuts, highlights the dire state the economy is now in.
