Dismay as 85-year rule axed

Union leaders have reacted with dismay at a decision by Deputy Prime Minister ~John Prescott~ to press ahead with plans to scrap the ‘85-year rule' at the centre of the local government pensions dispute.

The move was announced by local government minister, Phil Woolas, on Tuesday, as an estimated one million-plus council workers took part in the biggest industrial action since the 1926 General Strike.
