In 1964, both the local and national press questioned why Doncaster, a town of ‘beer, bop and bingo', needed a new museum and art gallery. Surely, such cultural refinement would be wasted on such a smoke-choked, coal and engine oil-smeared place?
Flash forward almost 60 years later to the inauguration of the new Danum Gallery, Library and Museum (DGLAM) and those dissenting voices are still there. Disappointingly, some still come from within Doncaster itself.
