Don't blame councils for local press decline

The yardstick of any newspaper should be its readership take-up, met by providing what people want to read, says Michael Burton.

At last week's NLGN reception at the Commons, communities secretary Eric Pickles had some warm words for councils.

He praised them again for their work during last summer's riots, and he told them to get on and use their powers and stop waiting for guidance from the DCLG and the rest of Whitehall.
