Leaked Department for Education (DfE) plans to slash staff numbers by 25% and halve running costs within two years could set the template for Whitehall reform, experts have suggested.

Leaked Department for Education (DfE) plans to slash staff numbers by 25% and halve running costs within two years could set the template for Whitehall reform, experts have suggested.

Restructuring proposals presented to ministers by new DfE permanent secretary, Chris Wormald, suggest 1,000 civil servants face the axe, and a similar number of remaining staff could be reallocated to time-limited projects.
