Just under half a million voters beat the Monday midnight deadline for registering their vote in a last minute surge, the Electoral Commission has revealed.

Around 485,000 people registered to vote on the Government Digital Service platform on Monday, and a further 16,000 paper applications were made.

This figure was more than three times the previous record single day for online enfranchisement, when 166,000 voters registered online on National Voter Registration day on 4 February.
