Last week chief statistician Sir Andrew Dilnot recommended major changes to how population data is collected. Jonathan Werran reports on what could be at stake for local government

 When the Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced last September it was consulting on a radical overhaul of the ten-yearly national Census, council chiefs expressed the hope local government could benefit from a fairer funding settlement under proposals to change how population data is collected.

Local government finance experts have long queried the accuracy of Census data, which is used as indicators for a quarter of the formula funding allocated each year.
