Let's end going home alone

Chief operating officer for Royal Voluntary Service, John Pearson, says councils, the NHS and volunteers must work together to combat the delayed discharge crisis.

The ageing population coupled with colder and harsher winters means hospitals are finding themselves dealing with an increasing number of patients, which is, in turn, causing pressure to mount on nurses to free-up valuable beds.

But older people are more vulnerable than other age groups and it is essential that there is sufficient support in place for them at home before they are able to leave hospital.
