Ensuring our places' success

The Sustainable Growth Index rankings reflect a dominant focus on economic growth over the past 20 years, says Rob Turner. He provides a checklist for ensuring strong economic performance goes hand-in-hand with broader measures of success.

Place matters. Successful places are environments where people want to live and work. They attract visitors, investment and enable and support sustainable growth.

Grant Thornton's Sustainable Growth Index seeks to define and measure the components that create successful places. The measures included extend beyond the traditional economic measures of success to include components related to: prosperity; dynamism and opportunity; inclusion and equality; health, wellbeing and happiness; resilience and sustainability; and community, trust and belonging. By looking across this broader framework of success an interesting geographic picture emerges.
