Let's excite the electorate to head for the polls

Heather Jameson reflects on local democracy and asks what charismatic new mayors might do to voter turnout

Happy local election day! With the nation going to the polls – or at least a bit of the nation – it is a good moment to reflect on democracy.

As Katie Ghose, of the Electoral Reform Society, points out in this week's MJ, local election turnout has only topped 40% once in nearly a decade so just how much of a response should we expect?
