Rural communities should be exempted from the Government's Right to Buy programme in order to preserve scarce social housing resources in countryside areas, housing professionals have urged this week.

In its Budget submission released 24 February, the Chartered Institute for Housing (CIH) calls on the chancellor to ensure council housing in areas with less than 3,000 inhabitants is excluded from right to buy – to protect the dwindling supply of affordable homes in rural areas.
