Councils remain in the dark over how this year's allocation for ‘crucial' local welfare assistance funding was worked out by the Government.

In a response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) claimed its suggestion that some of the money should be used to ease financial pressures on health and social care came as a direct response to council representations.
