Facing down a perfect storm of violence

This summer will be one of the most challenging local councils have faced when it comes to bearing down on violent crime and its devastating consequences says Cllr Jas Athwal. He looks at how London boroughs are tackling the issue.

Over the past 16 months, violent crime has been hidden from view, as pandemic restrictions meant that perpetrators were unlikely to encounter potential victims in person, outside of a domestic setting.

While 999 calls and arrests decreased, social and relationship tensions have been exacerbated by the pressurised conditions of successive lockdowns, with many disputes being continued and magnified online via social media and messaging platforms.
