Going further and faster on pensions decarbonisation

Islington LBC began decarbonising its pension fund seven years ago and has reduced emissions by 40% in the last two years alone. Cllr Paul Convery says it’s a financially sound strategy.

Climate change is never out of the news. And recently, its political saliency has increased sharply.

Many local authorities have followed the UK Government's commitment to net zero. In Islington, we have set ourselves the bold target of creating a net-zero carbon borough by 2030. As with other authorities, we have strong support among our voters but there is also some unease – especially for measures which are complicated to deliver or which are perceived to cause financial pain to some residents amidst the current cost of living crisis.
