Local authorities will need to take a bold leadership role in public health to lessen the widening mortality gap between the UK and other industrialised countries warns a leading health study.

Research in the medical publication The Lancet says that while life expectancy in the UK increased by four years between 1990 and 2010 and that overall health has increased 'substantially' it has grown worse compared to the major EU states, the US, Canada and Australia.
