Female staff win latest stage in equal pay fight

Female employees of Birmingham City Council have advanced their campaign for equal pay compensation, after an employment appeal tribunal in London found in their favour.

If successful, the low-paid women can claim up to six years' back pay. Birmingham City Council had challenged many women's claims on three main technical points. These included, in a move with national implications, contesting permission for several thousand women employed in community schools to compare wages with men employed in jobs of equal value elsewhere for the council.
