Communities secretary, Eric Pickles, has warned local government finance officers to avoid becoming involved in ‘highly-political decisions' when offering advice over council tax levels.

Speaking at the Local Government Association's (LGA) finance conference on 27 January, Mr Pickles said hikes in council tax would make life very difficult for public sector workers facing an extended pay freeze and higher pension contributions.
