Wanted: fiscal reform not fiscal frustration

'To bemoan any Government’s inability to take difficult political decisions when it has been in power for 14 years is to wriggle out of collective responsibility', says Heather Jameson.

Local government finance reform is long overdue. No one can argue with minister Simon Hoare's admission at last week's District Councils' Network conference.

He told the DCN the current finance regime was unfit for purpose and should have been reviewed by now – but that no one would have appreciated a consultation landing on their desk mid-pandemic. Alas, Hoare claimed, it's too late in this Parliament now to consider such a thing.
