Better food policies for councils' menus

Ahead of the local elections in May, and in the context of a council funding crisis, Sofia Parente looks at the levers candidates can use to ensure better food policies are priorities.

A third of children leave primary school overweight or obese, while many households are struggling to eat healthily. Some 900,000 children from low-income families miss out on a free school meal and millions in Healthy Start payments go unclaimed.

We are a nation of nature lovers, but our natural capital is depleted and species are in decline. The food system employs one in seven UK workers, contributing more than £120bn to the economy, but half of fruit and vegetable farmers fear going out of business. Food and farming are both the drivers and the solutions to these challenges.
