Fools rush in

Claire Fox believes councils should look at the evidence before rushing to intervene in regulating the sugar or tobacco intake of their residents

Members of the new health and wellbeing boards may well have been left scratching their heads if they read two conflicting front page newspaper stories on 27 March.

The Evening Standard reported that the Government's chief medical officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies complained that the average person in England is overweight but in denial ‘about the right weight', while ‘three-quarters of parents with overweight children do not recognise that they are too fat'.

Conclusion? Make sure anyone with a high body mass index (BMI) is lectured about the perils of obesity.
