Everyone's favourite South of France domiciled, off-shore tax campaign group, the Taxpayers' Alliance, firmly struck an issue from the rough onto the news fairway last week.

In a report which will have had tumblers shaking in the 19th hole, the alliance reported that councils own a total of 407 golf courses nationwide, which are subsidised at a cost to the public purse of £8m a year.
