As residents across the UK head to the polls, and with Labour still predicted to pull off a majority, Dame Meg Hillier is in a reflective, yet optimistic mood.

The Labour politician's long stint on Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) included, most recently, nine years as its chair. It was a job that arguably offered Westminster's best overview of the state of public services.
