In the blaze of publicity over the general election three weeks ago, the local elections were almost an afterthought. Will fixed-term parliaments compound the problem, ask George Jones and John Stewart.

On 6 May, there were elections in about half the local authorities in England, including all-out elections in the London boroughs.
